World number one Iga Swiatek has celebrated a commanding start at the WTA Finals. Meanwhile, her upcoming opponent Caroline Garcia set a new record for the year.

After Maria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka had already made their mark in Texas on Tuesday night, Swiatek followed suit. The 21-year-old had no trouble against her Russian opponent Darya Kasatkina in the first round and won in two sets (6:2; 6:3). Remarkably, it was her 46th match this year in which she did not have to surrender a set to her opponent – only Serena Williams (66) and Agnieszka Radwanska (46) had managed that before.

370th ace: Record for victorious Garcia

Caroline Garcia of France also started the tournament of the current top eight tennis players victoriously. She was also able to celebrate after two sets, defeating Cori Gauff of the USA 6:4 and 6:3. In the process, Garcia set a new record: she recorded her 370th ace this year – more than any other player.

The match continues on Thursday night (CET) with the duel between Ons Jabeur and Jessica Pegula (11 pm). Later Maria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka will face each other (1 am). Swiatek meets Garcia the following night. Gauff will take on Kasatkina.
