Superbilke World Championship returns to Australia in 2022 – Phillip Island to host season finale just a week after WSBK round in Indonesia

The 2022 World Superbike Championship race calendar is getting an addition. After the season was originally set at eleven stops, the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit now joins the list of venues. The Australian circuit is scheduled to host the season finale from 18 to 20 November.

The season will thus end with a doubleheader, as just one week before, WSBK will make a guest appearance in Indonesia, which will retain its date of 11 to 13 November. It is the first time since 2010 that a WSBK season has ended with two consecutive rounds, and the 11th time in the championship’s history.

Phillip Island thus makes its comeback to the race calendar after being unable to host a race for the past two years due to the ongoing Corona pandemic. The circuit has been part of the calendar since 1990 and has hosted the most WSBK races to date, 61 in number.

In most cases, it opened the season with the first race of the year. So riders and teams will have to adjust as they race around the 4.4-kilometre track at a very different time of the year when the grip is different.

In fact, this is not the first time Phillip Island has hosted the season finale. In the championship’s 35-year history, this has happened three times before – most recently in 1996. Apart from 2022, however, Australia is expected to return to its traditional place on the calendar as the season opener in the future.
