The Chilean national team still has hopes of participating in the World Cup finals in Qatar despite failing to qualify.
The Chilean national football team is still hoping to participate in the World Cup finals (21 November to 18 December) in Qatar despite failing to qualify. Chile has lodged a protest with the world governing body FIFA because Ecuador allegedly used an ineligible player in defender Byron Castillo in the South American qualifiers – Castillo is actually a Colombian.
Chile’s multi-page statement of claim to FIFA, obtained by The Times, is said to include Castillo’s birth certificate, which shows the defender was born in Colombia three years earlier than originally known. FIFA had not confirmed receipt of the protest by Thursday afternoon when asked by SID.
Chile had only finished seventh in qualifying, but hopes to jump to fourth place by annulling all the match results in which Castillo played. Ecuador had won this place and thus qualified for the World Cup. Between the two nations are Peru and Colombia – Castillo did not play against either team.
