The Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven has won his first title on the ATP Tour in a complete surprise at the grass tournament in Hertogenbosch. In the final on Sunday, the world number 205 beat the Russian Daniil Medvedev 6:4, 6:1. Van Rijthoven (25) was competing in his home country with a wild card. Before that, he had not won a single match at the top level of the professional tour.
Medvedev (26), the new ATP ranking leader as of Monday, is still waiting for his first tournament win this season. Next week, he will compete in Halle/Westphalia, after which he will have an involuntary break due to the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian professionals at Wimbledon (from 27 June).
In the women’s singles, Medvedev’s compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova beat Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) 7:5, 6:0 in the final in Hertogenbosch. Both players are not allowed to compete in Wimbledon.
