The Norwegian had just returned from a week-long injury break, now Dortmund’s best striker is threatening to be out again. The blame lies with a foul in the international match against Armenia, after which he was substituted.
Will Borussia Dortmund have to do without its top striker again? Ahead of the match against RB Leipzig on Saturday evening, the Bundesliga runners-up are worried about goal scorer Erling Haaland.
BVB coach Marco Rose confirmed at Thursday’s press conference that the Norwegian is unlikely to feature against Leipzig. “Erling Haaland is very questionable. The foot is completely twisted away, the ankle is very swollen.”
“Blood on the ankle“
Haaland suffered the injury on Tuesday in the Test international against Armenia, which the Scandinavians won 9-0. He scored twice but was hit hard on the ankle by opposite number Mkrtchyan during his second goal in first-half injury time. The BVB star twisted his ankle and remained in pain beside the goal instead of cheering. He was then escorted to the dressing room by attendants and did not return to the pitch for the second period.
Norway’s co-coach Kent Bergersen told TV2 during the break: “That was a tough half for Erling. There was a lot of blood on his ankles, so we are taking it easy on him.” Head coach Stale Solbakken said after the game that Haaland wanted to continue playing. But BVB coach Rose’s words now sounded less optimistic. Final certainty will probably only come from the last examinations before the Leipzig game.
