Two-time Olympic basketball champion Brittney Griner has been detained in Russia for a longer period of time after her arrest for alleged possession of drugs at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport. A court in the Moscow Region city of Khimki extended the arrest until 19 May, the Tass news agency reported on Thursday.

Griner faces up to ten years in prison

As the Interfax news agency reported in early March, citing Russian customs, so-called vape cartridges and hashish oil were discovered in the American’s luggage during a check in February. Griner has been arrested and is under investigation. She is reportedly facing five to ten years in prison. So far, there is said to have been no consular assistance from the USA.

The name of the arrested basketball player was not initially given by the customs authorities, but Russian media wrote that it was Griner. Since 2015, the 31-year-old US national player has also played for the UMMC Yekaterinburg team in the Urals. Griner won the Euroleague four times with the Russian top club.
