Good news for all teams still participating in the Champions League, Europa League or Europa Conference League. They are allowed to re-nominate two players, as Uefa announced.

From idea to action: All teams still in the Champions League, Europa League or Europa Conference League will be allowed to re-nominate two additional players for their line-up. This was announced by the European Football Union (Uefa) on Tuesday. The deadline is 1 April 2022.

With this, Uefa has put into practice the decision of the world governing body Fifa regarding retroactively changing professionals from Ukraine and Russia. The rule also applies to women’s football, but here the deadline is six days later on 7 April.

DFB decided against proposal

Fifa had last decided to allow transfers of foreign players and coaches from Ukraine and Russia despite the long ago end of the transfer period (31 January) as a consequence of the Russian attack on Ukraine. Since last week, this also applies to Ukrainians if they can leave the country.

Despite Fifa’s permission, the German Football Association (DFB) has spoken out against granting permission to play for the current season to players who have subsequently transferred. The players are only allowed to participate in training and test matches.

“The main reason for the DFB’s decision is to preserve the sporting integrity of the competitions and the remaining match days of the 2021/2022 season in all divisions,” the association let it be known.
