AC Milan was clearly on course for victory until the 87th minute, but Ibanez’s first finish brought Roma back into the top-of-the-table match late on Sunday night, before Abraham even equalised in stoppage time.
On paper, the Serie A matchday 17 concluded with a thriller, but chances were scarce for a long time in the clash between defending champions Milan and AS Roma. The Rossoneri dominated their home match right from the start and even the noble technicians Rafael Leao and Brahim Diaz were convincing with their strong actions – but even they could not find any gaps against the tight Roma defence.
Kalulu heads Milan into the lead
As in the 2-1 win over US Salernitana at the start of the year, it was once again Tonali who had to assist to give his team the lead after a patient 30-minute feeling-out period. After an initial warning shot from Brahim Diaz, it was the 22-year-old who sent the ensuing corner straight to defender Kalulu. His header slipped over the glove of goalkeeper Rui Patricio and found its way into the net for 1-0.
Roma, who were again without coach José Mourinho, who was suspended for two games before the World Cup, after the 1-0 defeat to Bologna, were unable to win any more of the game, but increasingly found their offensive play. First, Dybala missed the ball from a good position (34th) and Zalewski, who had moved in, just missed the target (42nd). However, the Giallorossi were unable to create any compelling chances for an equaliser against a wide-awake Milan.
The First Roma goal was in the 87th – and it was on target
The second half was no different: Milan dominated the game with a possession rate of around 70 per cent, but chances on goal were still scarce. Theo at least tested AS keeper Rui Patricio with a long-range shot (42nd minute). Roma then dared to come out of their guard a bit more, but also lacked any danger. That’s why Milan thought they had already won the match after they had scored the second goal.
After a fine counter-attack on the left and the active Rafael Leao, Giroud created space for the substitute Pobega with a great run and a deflected low shot in front of Patricio to make it 2-0 (77).
