A bitter day for Real Madrid: After a bad draw in the Champions League, the Spanish champions also lose the top spot in the standings to Barca.

The bad day for Real Madrid is complete!

After being drawn against Liverpool FC in the Champions League, the Spanish champions also had to relinquish the lead in the La Liga table this evening.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti’s side lost at mid-table Rayo Vallecano despite leading at one stage in the city duel and was unable to overtake arch-rivals FC Barcelona, who had jumped to first place in the table on Saturday thanks to a 2-0 win over UD Almería.

Kroos, Rüdiger and Benzema missing for Real

Without Toni Kroos, Antonio Rüdiger, and Karim Benzema, Real lost 2:3 (2:2). It was the first defeat in the championship this season. The Madrilenians are now two points behind Barca.

Santi Comesana gave Rayo Vallecano the lead in the 5th minute. Luka Modric (37th, penalty) and Éder Militao (41st) turned the game around before Álvaro García (44th) equalized for the hosts.

Óscar Trejo scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 67th minute.
