UFC president Dana White becomes embroiled in a violent altercation with his wife on New Year’s Eve – and quickly struggles to do damage control.

The maker of the billion-dollar UFC has had to deal with several scandals involving violent celebrities – and now he is at the centre of it.

Dana White got into a physical altercation with his wife Anne while visiting a club in Mexico on New Year’s Eve.

A video released by tabloid portal TMZ shows an argument between the two in which Anne slaps her husband, to which he responds by raising the flat of his hand at her and punching in her direction. It’s not easy to tell if he hit her or how hard, but just the attempt puts the boss of Conor McGregor and co. on edge – as can also be seen from his reaction.

Dana White asks for an apology for the attack on a woman

White quickly agreed to an interview with TMZ and shows himself remorseful in it: the incident was “terrible”, and both he and Anne were very drunk, but this is “no excuse”, especially for him: “I’ve said for years: there’s no excuse when a man lays a hand on a woman – and now here I am at TMZ and I have to talk about it myself.”

The 53-year-old asserted that it was the first time a conflict between Anne and him had escalated physically, and the two had apologised to each other and also talked things over with their three children.

Anne White confirmed in a statement that the matter had been resolved – and asked for respect for her privacy: “Dana and I have been married for almost 30 years. To say that this is not his usual behaviour is an understatement. Nothing like this has ever happened between us. We drank too much on New Year’s Eve and things got out of hand.”

Domestic violence was often an issue in the UFC

For White, the incident is problematic in many ways, as he watches over a league as an authority that has often been in the spotlight for domestic violence by its stars.

The most prominent case in this regard is top star Jon Jones; as recently as 2021, White also fired lightweight fighter Luis Pena after an arrest for physically assaulting his girlfriend – and an eyewitness who tried to help her. There have also been multiple allegations of sexual violence against McGregor.

The incident gains additional piquancy from White’s latest business venture: the Power Slap league, with which he is making a big splash in the current trend of slap fighting – duels played out as a sporting competition.
