The tournaments in Washington started on Monday. From the German point of view Dominic Koepfer was challenged – and he fought his way into round two.

Dominik Koepfer (Furtwangen) has entered the second round at the ATP tournament in Washington. The world number 145, who had entered the main draw as a qualifier, defeated the South Korean Kwon Soon Woo (ATP 77) after 2:21 hours 3:6, 6:3, 6:4.

Koepfer, who was down 1-4 in the deciding set, will face seventh seed Karen Khachanov in the second round. Koepfer was defeated by his opening opponent at the two previous US tournaments in Newport (grass court) and Atlanta (hard court).

The tournament is part of the North American hard court season, which culminates with the US Open in New York from 29 August.
