Laura Siegemund won the doubles competition of the WTA tournament in Miami with her Russian partner Vera Zvonareva – quite surprisingly.
The duo beat top seeds Elise Mertens/Veronika Kudermetova (Belgium/Russia) 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 in the final, their second success in a short time.
Siegemund/Zvonareva had only triumphed at the tournament in Lyon at the beginning of March, when Siegemund made her comeback after knee surgery. Both also won the US Open together in 2020 and now have three trophies after ten events together.
Siegemund “never expected” to be so successful again so soon after her return to the tour: “It’s just so nice to be able to move without pain, to concentrate and play good tennis.” The 2020 French Open singles quarter-finalist is also part of the German team that will battle Kazakhstan for a place in the final round of the Billie Jean King Cup on 15 and 16 April in Nur-Sultan.
