Before the EuroLeague match between Zalgiris Kaunas and Red Star Belgrade, a flag of Ukraine is held up by players and referees. However, one team does not take part in the protest.
The atrocities committed by the Russian army in Ukraine shock the whole world. In many places, athletes are joining forces before the games to show support for Ukraine and send a signal against the war.
On Sunday, however, there was a scandal in the EuroLeague. The Lithuanian basketball team Zalgiris Kaunas received the Serbian representative Red Star Belgrade.
While the Lithuanian players together with the referees held up a flag of Ukraine with the words “Stop War!” and thus demonstrated their support, the five Serbian professionals refused to take part in the protest action.
The audience acknowledged this behaviour with a roar of whistles and boos. The Serbian professionals, however, seemed to care little about this and smiled at each other, unimpressed.
The result of 103:98 in favour of the Lithuanian home team Zalgiris Kaunaus faded into the background in view of this unspeakable behaviour on the part of the Serbian players.
Parts of the Serbian government and population are said to be pro-Russia.
