Haas puts contract talks with Mick Schumacher on hold for the time being. The American racing team is not under any time pressure because the option as Vettel’s successor has fallen through.

According to media reports, Mick Schumacher will have to wait longer for clarity about his future in Formula 1. The Haas team has put a possible contract extension with the 23-year-old on hold during the summer break, as “RTL/ntv” reported on Thursday. According to the report, there could be talks about further cooperation at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza on 11 September at the earliest.

The starting point for the change of mind at Haas was the signing of Fernando Alonso as Sebastian Vettel’s successor at the British team Aston Martin – the young German’s position worsened because the option of a change fell through: He lacks leverage against Haas.

Switch to Alpine unlikely

A switch to Alpine as Alonso’s successor is unlikely for Schumacher as a Ferrari protégé. At Ferrari partner Alfa Romeo, the Chinese Guanyu Zhou, thanks to good performances and strong sponsorship support, has the best chances of keeping his cockpit next to Valtteri Bottas, who has a long-term commitment. So Haas currently appears to be Schumacher’s best option for a regular seat in Formula 1 next season.
