Detained in Moscow since mid-February, will go on trial from Friday.

US basketball player Brittney Griner, who has been detained in Moscow since mid-February, will go on trial on Friday. The authorities from the Russian city of Khimki made the announcement on Monday.

Most recently, the detention had already been extended until 2 July (Saturday), but now it will last at least until the end of the trial.

Griner, who faces drug charges, was handcuffed and taken to a hearing on Monday. The two-time Olympic champion was arrested at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport on 17 February.

Griner (31) is accused of carrying vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage.

According to the US State Department, the basketball star is being held in Russian custody without cause. Most recently, the players of the US professional league WNBA had demanded Griner’s release.

Griner was champion with Phoenix Mercury in 2014, and since 2015 she has played in Russia with UMMC Ekaterinburg during the WNBA break.
