Last year’s finalists Spain miss out on a prestigious win over Portugal at the start of the third Nations League. The Czech Republic beat Switzerland.

The 2010 world champions only managed a 1:1 (1:0) against their neighbours Portugal in Group A2 despite taking the lead. Alvaro Morata (25th) scored first for the Spaniards, who lost the final against France 2-1 in October. Substitute Ricardo Horta (82nd) equalised.

The Czech Republic moved to the top of the table. In Prague, the hosts defeated Switzerland 2-1 in a duel between two quarter-finalists of the last European Football Championship.

A dream goal put the Spaniards in the lead: young star Gavi initiated a perfect counterattack by winning the ball in his own half. After a 40-metre sprint, the 17-year-old served Pablo Sarabia, who passed the ball directly to the scorer Morata.

The best chance to equalise before the break came from Leipzig’s Andre Silva, whose shot just missed the far corner (35th).

After the break, the visitors stepped up their attacking efforts: Rafael Leao had a chance to make it 1-1 when he was released by Silva but failed to beat goalkeeper Unai Simon (59).

A little later, superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who had been on the bench until then, joined the action for Portugal. But Horta scored the equaliser.

Bayer Leverkusen’s addition Adam Hlozek, announced in the afternoon, was in the Czech starting eleven, while his new teammate Patrik Schick, the second-leading scorer in the Bundesliga season, was absent after groin surgery.

Jan Kuchta (11) gave the hosts the lead, Noah Okafor (44) equalised for the Swiss, who fielded six Bundesliga professionals. Djibril Sow (58th) of Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt deflected a cross into his own goal.

Erling Haaland fired Norway to a 1-0 (1-0) win in Serbia in Group B4. The goal scorer, who is moving from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City, scored in the 26th minute in Belgrade. It was his 16th goal in 18 international matches.
