The Olympic Refugee Foundation and the Refugee Team of the International Olympic Committee have been awarded.
The Olympic Refugee Foundation and the International Olympic Committee Refugee Team have been awarded the 2022 Princess of Asturias Prize. Leonor, Princess of Asturias, presented the award to IOC President Thomas Bach on Friday, who was accompanied by two members of the IOC Refugee Team, boxer Eldric Sella and cyclist Masomah Ali Zada.
“The Olympic Refugee Foundation and the refugee team remind us that sport, high-performance sports competitions, and the Olympic Movement also serve to remind us of, reflect on and alleviate ? as much as possible. the harsh reality in which so many people live in the world,” said Spain’s, King Felipe IV.
The IOC has been supporting refugees through sports since 1994. An IOC refugee team competed for the first time at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Before the Tokyo Summer Games in 2021, the Olympic Movement supported 56 refugee athletes from 13 countries.
