A major blow for FC Barcelona: Xavi is said to have informed his former team-mate and club icon Gerard Piqué that he will no longer play a role in the plans for the new season – the reasons are probably not only of a sporting nature.
Will Gerard Piqué and FC Barcelona part ways after 14 years?
Gerard Piqué apparently has no future at FC Barcelona. According to a report in Spanish Sport, Xavi informed his defender in a personal conversation a fortnight ago that he would no longer play a role in the plans for the coming season.
According to the report, Xavi justified his decision with physical problems and unprofessional behaviour on the pitch. In addition, the Barca coach wants to restructure his central defence and build on younger players.
Will Piqué’s departure from Barca become a hanging matter?
Piqué, who made 39 appearances for the Catalans last season, has a contract that runs until 2024.
An early parting of the ways could turn into a long wait, as it is suspected that the club currently owes the 35-year-old around 34 million euros due to deferred payments.
It was only last week that it became known that Piqué and pop singer Shakira are no longer a couple – now he is apparently also threatened with the end of his contract with Barca.
After Lionel Messi, Xavi, Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta, the 35-year-old is the player with the fifth most appearances in Barca history.
