What will become of the original Overwatch when Overwatch 2 is released on 04 October 2022? The developer has now made a clear announcement that might not please all fans…

Overwatch 2 will bury its predecessor – Overwatch 1 will become Overwatch 2. Blizzard developer Aaron Keller has now confirmed this again on reddit. For the release on 04 October 2022, OW2 will “replace the previous Live Service”.

Overwatch 2 release still without story mode

There was uncertainty about what would become of Overwatch 1 and the game content there once the successor is playable. In the meantime, we know that the earned content and game progress will be transferred to the successor, but the original Overwatch will no longer be playable. Players will have to download a patch at release time that upgrades the current Overwatch to the new part. Initially, only the PvP mode will be playable for free. New information on the story mode, which will be released later, will not be available until 2023.

The significant difference in Overwatch 2’s multiplayer will be the switch to a 5v5 format. In addition, there will be three new heroes, six new maps and a fresh game mode. Content updates are to come every nine weeks to keep players happy in the long term. This is Blizzard’s response to a frequently read criticism of the tactical shooter that new content would appear too irregularly.

Those who want to get an impression of PvP before the release can apply for beta access on the official PlayOverwatch page.
