Naomi Osaka and Iga Swiatek are in the final of the WTA Masters in Miami. There, a former world number one and the new number one will meet on Sunday.

Japan’s Osaka beat Olympic champion Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday night (local time), while Poland’s Swiatek beat Jessica Pegula of the USA 6-2, 7-5.

For the former number one Osaka it is the first final on the WTA Tour since her victory at the Australian Open more than a year ago. Swiatek takes over the top spot in the world rankings after the withdrawal of Ashleigh Barty of Australia on Monday.

Hurkacz meets Alcaraz – Kohlschreiber and Stebe in action

Defending champion Hubert Hurkacz had earlier denied Daniil Medvedev a hoped-for return to the top of the world rankings at the Masters 1000 tournament, also in Miami. The 25-year-old Pole won against the one-year older Russian in the quarter-finals on Thursday with 7:6 (9:7), 6:3. In the semi-finals he will now meet the 18-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who won against the Serb Miomir Kecmanovic in an enormously exciting match 6:7 (5:7), 6:3, 7:6 (7:5).

Today, Friday, German veterans will fight for a place in the next round at tournaments in Europe: Philipp Kohlschreiber (38) will meet the Argentine Thiem defeater Pedro Cachin in the quarter-finals in Marbella, Cedric-Marcel Stebe (31) will play against the Austrian Jurij Rodionov in Lugano.
