Jule Niemeier narrowly missed a surprise at the French Open. Tatjana Maria had already been the first German tennis player to be eliminated.

Niemeier lost her Grand Slam debut in Paris on Sunday against the American Sloane Stephens 7:5, 4:6, 2:6 and was eliminated in the first round. The 22-year-old tennis player from Dortmund was plagued by a thigh injury in the last set and her movements were considerably restricted when she was thickly bandaged.

Earlier, the German young hope had put in a strong performance against the former Paris finalist and had the American on the brink of defeat. After winning the first set, Niemeier dominated the second set and even had break points at 4:3. Niemeier, who had qualified for the main draw, was unable to take advantage of her chances and lost the set. After that she had no chance against Stephens.

Maria out: 3:6 after 3:0 in the second set

The 34-year-old Maria from Bad Saulgau had to give in to the number 26 seed Sorana Cristea from Romania with 3:6, 3:6. Only at the beginning of the second set, when she took a 3-0 lead, was Maria able to continue her recent good performance.

After that, however, she quickly gave up the advantage and after only 64 minutes the clay court event at the Stade Roland Garros was already over for the mother of two. A total of five German women are in the main draw of the second Grand Slam tournament of the year.
