Lionel Messi is about to start his second year at Paris Saint-Germain. Not only is it supposed to be significantly better, but apparently it won’t be his last.

Lionel Messi’s first season at Paris Saint-Germain did not go according to plan.

The superstar among superstars often lacked the glamour of his old days – and could only rarely make the top team of Ligue 1 better. Nevertheless, a contract extension now beckons for the Argentine.

According to the Spanish sports newspaper Marca, citing sources in Paris, PSG has already approached Messi with the idea. According to the report, the club intends to tie the 36-year-old down for another year and thus until 2024.

Contrary to reports to the contrary, there is no clause for an automatic extension beyond 2023. Nor is there an offer ready to be signed by the player.

Messi much better in his second year at PSG?

Messi is not expected to make a decision on his future plans before the World Cup in Qatar. PSG have so far benefited from Messi’s arrival, especially in marketing terms. Even in a team with Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, the name of the long-time Barca star stood out.

However, according to the report, PSG wants to keep him primarily for sporting reasons. Club boss Nasser Al-Khelaifi had announced not long ago that fans can look forward to a Messi in absolute top form next season.

In his first year in Paris, the multiple world footballer was slowed down by various problems such as injuries, exhausting international trips and a Covid infection. Despite this, he still managed eleven goals and fifteen assists in 34 games for PSG.

Before signing with PSG, there had been speculation that Messi might spend his final years as a player in the US. A return to Newell’s Old Boys was also repeatedly mentioned as a possible option.
