NBA star and double MVP Nikola Jokic will lead the Serbian national team at the European Basketball Championships in September.

The national federation made the announcement on Wednesday. The 27-year-old centre from the Denver Nuggets, voted the NBA’s most valuable player in each of the past two seasons, is in the Serbian line-up for the first time since the 2019 World Cup.

The reigning European runners-up and Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallists will play their European Championship opener against the Netherlands in Prague on 2 September. Other group opponents of the co-favourites are the Czech Republic, Poland, Finland and Israel.

The European Championship preliminary round will take place in Prague, Milan, Tbilisi and Cologne, the final round with the final on 18 September in Berlin.

Luka Doncic, another NBA superstar, is expected to play alongside Jokic. The exceptional player of the Dallas Mavericks will be the European champion Slovenia’s opponent in the German team’s group in Cologne on 6 September.
