Paris St. Germain are crowned champions once again – equalling St. Etienne’s record. Lionel Messi provides a stroke of genius.
They do it on the same day as FC Bayern in the Bundesliga!
Paris St. Germain have secured the French football championship for the tenth time, catching up with record champions AS St. Etienne.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino’s side are now unstoppable at the top of the Ligue 1 table after a 1-1 (0-0) draw at home to RC Lens on Saturday.
PSG have won the league title eight times since the 2012/13 season. Last year, Neymar and Co. were surprisingly beaten by OSC Lille, while AS Monaco broke the capital club’s winning streak in 2016/17.
PSG champions ahead of schedule – Messi brilliant
For superstar Lionel Messi, who moved to the Seine from FC Barcelona last summer, it is his first title in a PSG shirt.
But PSG still have to wait for their dream goal, winning the top flight. This year, the star ensemble was defeated by Real Madrid in the round of 16. In the French Cup, they also lost to OGC Nice in the last 16.
The Argentine Messi scored the opening goal (68th) for the Parisians at the Princes’ Park on an assist from Neymar, who played with an advantage from the 57th minute onwards.
Former Bundesliga professional Kevin Danso was shown a yellow card for the visitors. Nevertheless, Corentin Jean scored the equaliser in the 88th minute.
Kehrer on the bench – Draxler injured
Thilo Kehrer was on the bench for the entire match. National team colleague Julian Draxler was absent due to a knee injury. Four matchdays are still to come.
