Kylian Mbappé’s decision to stay at PSG has the whole of France rejoicing. The French capital’s club may now be facing some landmark decisions.

We finally know: Kylian Mbappé will continue to score goals for Paris Saint Germain next season.

The fact that he has extended his contract not by one or two years, but by three, is a clear indication of his desire to continue making history in his home country, at least in the medium term.

Real Madrid plays no role for him. In Paris, he will now become the best-paid football player of all time.

He is also – at least felt – the very first player to turn down Real Madrid, or rather for the third time after 2015, when he preferred to go to AS Monaco’s youth centre, and 2017, when he preferred to move to PSG.

“It’s super news for PSG, but also League 1″.

Last summer, the Frenchman, who was born in Bondy (a Parisian suburb), wanted to continue his career with the Royals with all his might, but his Doha bosses decided to reject the 180-million offer from the Spanish capital and that was despite the fact that “KMB” only had one year left on his contract.

“Of course I am insanely happy that Kylian is staying. It’s great news for PSG, but also for Ligue1″, ex-PSG winger and presenter at RMC Sport Jérôme Rothen rejoiced.

“First of all, it’s nice that this chapter is coming to an end. It took far too long anyway and you would hardly have expected this decision a few days ago. But how he and his family were able to keep the whole football world on tenterhooks until the end is unique.”

Landmark decisions likely ahead at PSG

Rothen now assumes that this extension means only the beginning of a hot summer at PSG.

“I am firmly convinced that there are important decisions to be made at PSG in the coming days. Without directional guarantees at the coaching post and at the position of sports director, Kylian would certainly not have given his yes word. There will also be a lot of changes in the squad so that everything is in place to get even closer to the dream of winning the handle pot.”

Does this mean that Zinedine Zidane will succeed Mauricio Pochettino? “Mbappé will give PSG a new direction,” says David Ginola, who was French champion with PSG in 1994.

“He will get a lot of power, maybe the captain’s armband for example. This contract extension is a big win for Qatar and a huge defeat for Real Madrid, who are not used to getting such a basket case.”

In addition to Zidane, Belgium coach Roberto Martinez, La Spezia coach and ex-PSG midfielder Thiago Motta and Joachim Löw are all being hotly tipped.

Did President Macron interfere in Mbappé poker?

Things can move very quickly in the coming days. Sporting director Leonardo was already sacked at the weekend, although official confirmation is still lacking.

There will also be some changes in the squad of players. The bosses want to get rid of no less than ten players, including the German international Julian Draxler, goal scorer Mauro Icardi, Sergio Ramos and keeper Keylor Navas.

In recent weeks, it has been rumoured that even France’s president Emmanuel Macron has intervened in the Mbappé poker, or rather that he was able to convince Mbappé to stay together with PSG boss Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

Another incentive was the prospect of Mbappé playing in the 2024 Olympics as a Parisian, which has always been his dream. This means that his summer will be more than full in two years’ time, with the European Championship finals in Germany to boot.

Mbappé takes goal-scoring crown for the fourth time

Mbappé’s treble in the final home game of the season against FC Metz (5-0) gave him the goalscoring crown for the fourth time in a row.

Fans had been silent at every home game since the Champions League round of 16 exit against Real. Mbappé has been the only PSG player spared the fierce whistles.

Thanks to his contract extension, the supporters declared their quarrel definitely over at the break. Celebrations went on all night and the word Mbappé was mentioned much more often than the 10th championship title.
