In the Premier League, Manchester United only have an outside chance of reaching the top four. Hopes for a successful end to the season were therefore pinned on the Champions League. But here, too, the “Red Devils” disappointed.
Manchester United with coach Ralf Rangnick failed to reach the last 16 of the Champions League against Atlético Madrid. The team around superstar Cristiano Ronaldo lost the second leg in their own stadium with 0:1 and was eliminated after the 1:1 in the first leg. The decisive goal was scored by winger Renan Lodi with a header (41st minute). The result means Manchester have been eliminated from all national and international cup competitions.
How the match went
Manchester started strongly in front of 73,000 spectators at Old Trafford, Anthony Elanga missed the first big chance when he shot the ball at goalkeeper Jan Oblak’s head (13th). On the other side, Rodrigo de Paul failed to save brilliantly against United keeper David De Gea (16th).
The “Red Devils” dominated, Atlético counterattacked: After Antoine Griezman’s cross, Lodi surprisingly headed the visitors into the lead, Ronaldo loudly and gesticulately complained about a supposed foul before the attack. Oblak prevented Bruno Fernandes from equalising shortly before the break (45.+2).
Right after the restart, Elanga just missed the far corner (46th). The ex-Dortmund player Jadon Sancho volleyed just over the bar (59th), then Raphael Varane failed with a header against Oblak (77th).
In the final phase, the Madrilenians defended with all eleven players, standing deep in their own half. For this approach, Atlético coach Diego Simeone and his players also received a lot of criticism from the opposing fans. After the final whistle, the Argentine ran into the catacombs while cups and other objects flew in his direction.
