The body of the late football icon Pelé will return to the Santos FC stadium on Monday. Afterward, the mourning ceremonies continue.
It was four o’clock in the morning when some fans in Santos had already gathered at the Estadio Urbano Caldeira in the Vila Belmiro district so as not to miss the last arrival of their great legend. They had flags and banners in tow, as well as their grief, of course.
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, immortalized as football idol Pelé, will be laid to rest on Monday in the center of the pitch where he once played. From 10 a.m. (local time), not only Santos fans will be able to pay their last respects to the body of the exceptional sportsman who died at the age of 82.
The coffin, which will have 80 chairs for friends and relatives, will be covered by a pavilion. Fans will be able to walk about five meters past the three-time world champion on a kind of catwalk. Brazil’s President Lula is also expected to attend the wake, which is expected to last 24 hours.
On Tuesday, a funeral procession will follow through the neighborhood where Pelé’s 100-year-old mother still lives – to the Memorial Necropole Ecumenical cemetery high-rise, where the folk hero will finally be buried in the company of his relatives.
