Courted by two top clubs last summer, PSG star Georginio Wijnaldum is now being handed a title of the special kind. For the Dutchman, it is a humiliation.
Humiliation for PSG star Georginio Wijnaldum!
In a poll by Get French Football News, the Dutch international has been voted flop of the year.
Fans as well as pundits came to the decision that the Dutchman, who was heavily courted by FC Barcelona last summer before deciding to join France’s showpiece club, “did little more than look lost in PSG’s midfield while his team played around him” this past season.
The 31-year-old made 38 appearances for the French champions last season, starting 22 times. He scored three goals and provided assists for three other goals.
Wijnaldum leaves Barcelona on the left
In the 2020/21 season, Wijnaldum made 31 starting appearances in a total of 51 games under Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool FC.
The midfielder, who moved to Anfield Road from Newcastle United in 2016, was a mainstay of the Reds’ historic first English league title in 30 years (2020) and their Champions League triumph in 2019.
Performances that also put him at the top of FC Barcelona’s wish list in the summer of 2021. However, the Catalans lost out after PSG reportedly offered almost double the salary.
