France struggles to win against Belgium at the European Championship. One top player stands out with an unbelievable miss.
France’s women’s footballers have reached the quarter-finals of the European Championship in England without much glamour.
The co-favourites defeated Belgium 2-1 (2-1) in Rotherham on Thursday. The second win not only secured the French women’s place in the tournament but also top spot in Group D.
Kadidiatou Diani (6th) and Griedge Mbock Bathy (41st) fired France into the next round, while Janice Cayman (36th) put the Belgians ahead.
Wendie Renard could have added to the tally in the 90th minute with a penalty, which Belgium’s Amber Tysiak caused with a handball and received a yellow-red card for. Instead, she made an unbelievable miss.
After Nicky Evrard’s save, the ball bounced back to the feet of Renard, who only had to push it into the empty net from four metres out. Instead, she manages the feat of kicking the ball to the left of the goal.
Bitter: The French star striker Marie-Antoinette Katoto (Paris St. Germain) had to be substituted after 17 minutes due to injury.
