Clarity is expected soon!

The US basketball player Brittney Griner, imprisoned in Russia, will apparently soon find out what punishment awaits her. The verdict will come “very soon”, Maria Blagovolina, a member of the 31-year-old’s legal team, said on Tuesday.

Griner hopes “that she will be able to go home at some point, and we hope so too”, Blagowolina said. However, she and her colleagues are not involved in the negotiations about a possible prisoner exchange between the USA and Russia, which could save Griner from remaining in prison.

Up to ten years in prison

Griner was also in court on Tuesday. She was led into the courtroom in handcuffs and took a seat in a cage. The next hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

Griner has to stand trial in Khimki for violations of national drug laws, facing up to ten years in prison.

The two-time Olympic champion was arrested in February at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport after security forces found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. Griner pleaded guilty at the beginning of the trial.
