Inter Milan’s substitute goalkeeper makes a serious mistake in the away match in Bologna. As a result, Inter lose the lead in the table to their city rivals.

Goalkeeper error, tears, title gone? Drama in the battle for the Serie A championship!

Due to a goalkeeper error, Inter Milan lost the catch-up match against FC Bologna with 1:2 on Wednesday evening and thus lost the top spot in the table to their city rivals AC Milan.

Unlucky Ionut Radu left the pitch in tears after the game. The 24-year-old is normally the substitute keeper behind regular goalkeeper Samir Handanovic. For this reason, he had not yet played a league match this season until Wednesday evening.

But because Handanovic had suffered an injury to his abdomen at short notice, Radu helped out and experienced what was probably his most bitter career game to date.

With the score at 1-1, ex-Bayern player Ivan Perisic threw the ball to his goalkeeper from a throw-in on the left. He tried to shift it to the right side with his left foot, but he failed to hit the leather correctly – and the ball rolled towards his own goal.

Bologna striker Nicola Sansone hammered the ball into the goal just before it crossed the line and ran to his fans in jubilation. He was celebrated, but the ball would have crossed the line even without his support.

Radu stood frozen with his head down after the action. As a result, his team-mates were unable to close the gap in the remainder of the game.
His coach Simone Inzaghi was stunned by the defeat: “I’m very sorry for the boy, but these are things that can happen in football.

Inzaghi: “It doesn’t depend on us anymore”

Now Inter have two points less than Milan and consequently the championship is no longer in their own hands.

“Unfortunately, it doesn’t depend on us now. We have to watch what Milan do and win all the remaining games,” Inzaghi said.

Tuttosport wrote: “Radu’s mistake costs Inter dearly: The goalkeeper despairs at the end of the game.”

Italian newspaper La Gazetta dello Sport followed up with the headline: “Harakiri Inter: Radu gives three points to Bologna and half a Scudetto to Milan.”

Corriere dello Sport took a similar line: “Inter: Radu’s sensational duck could cost the Scudetto.”

Handanovic ignores Radu

The explosive fact is that regular keeper Handanovic, who was sitting on the bench with an injury, went into the dressing room after the match without batting an eyelid and did not give his team-mate a glance.

Other teammates dealt with Radu differently, trying to comfort him and giving him a hug. Denzel Dumfries also covered the camera that was pointed at the Romanian on the sidelines.
