Qualifier Natasja Schunk and wildcard holder Jule Niemeier were eliminated in the first round at the tennis tournament in Stuttgart. The 22-year-old Niemeier from Dortmund lost to the former Canadian US Open winner Bianca Andreescu 6:7 (5:7), 3:6 on Tuesday evening.

The 18-year-old Schunk from Ludwigshafen lost to Kazakhstan’s Jelena Rybakina 6-7 (3-7), 5-7. The world number 19 Rybakina played a decisive role in Kazakhstan’s victory over the German team in the Billie Jean King Cup last weekend. She won against the German number one, Angelique Kerber, in three sets and gave Laura Siegemund no chance.

German champion Eva Lys and lucky loser Tamara Korpatsch, on the other hand, progressed. In her first main draw match on the WTA Tour, the 20-year-old qualifier from Hamburg’s Club an der Alster defeated Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 to cause a big surprise. Korpatsch from Hamburg beat Camila Giorgi from Italy 3:6, 7:6 (7:2), 6:1.

Kerber meets Kontaveit – Korpatsch advances

On Wednesday (not before 18.30/Eurosport), three-time Grand Slam tournament winner Angelique Kerber will take her place in the tournament. The German number one from Kiel faces a difficult task against Estonian fifth seed Anett Kontaveit. Laura Siegemund against Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek and Lys in her round of 16 match against Poland’s world number one Iga Swiatek also have to play. The tournament is endowed with 611 210 euros.
