Andrea Petkovic has been eliminated in the first round of the Bad Homburg Open. The 34-year-old lost to the world number twelve Darya Kasatkina 1:6, 2:6 on Sunday.

Local hero Petkovic was last eliminated at the grass court tournament in Berlin in the round of 16 against Aliaksandra Sasnovich (Belarus), but had previously surprisingly eliminated former world number one Garbine Muguruza (Spain). This was followed by an outright defeat at the lawn tennis tournament, which is endowed with around 240,000 euros.

Defending champion Angelique Kerber starts the tournament this Monday (16.30 hrs). The 34-year-old 2018 Wimbledon champion will play qualifier Anastasia Gasanova from Russia. Kerber had decided not to start in Berlin and chose Bad Homburg as her final preparation for Wimbledon from 27 June to 10 July. She reached the semi-finals there last year.

There is a question mark over Sabine Lisicki’s first-round match against Olympic champion Belinda Bencic. The Swiss had to retire due to injury in the final of the grass court tournament in Berlin against Ons Jabeur from Tunisia on Sunday.
