After an alleged racist gaffe, the Formula 1 team Red Bull has terminated its reserve driver Jüri Vips.

The racing team said on Tuesday that the contract had been terminated following an investigation into the incident. “The team does not tolerate racism in any form,” a tweet from world champion Max Verstappen’s employer read.

Vips allegedly made racist comments in a stream on the internet platform Twitch. Via Instagram, the 21-year-old driver from Estonia subsequently asked for an “unreserved apology” for the language he used.

“I deeply regret my actions, this is not the example I want to set,” Vips wrote. As a Red Bull junior, he was a regular driver in the Formula 2 junior series, where he is seventh overall.

A drive in the practice session at the Spanish Grand Prix

In the first practice session of Formula 1 at the Spanish Grand Prix in May, he was used in the Red Bull. The racing series obliges the teams to give a young driver a chance in practice sessions at least twice a season.
