Ángel Di María’s contract at Paris Saint-Germain will not be renewed. Despite numerous successes, his time in France was anything but easy for the Argentine.

This decision caused astonishment in the football world.

As Paris Saint-Germain announced on Friday, the contract with Ángel Di María will not be renewed. According to various media reports, the Argentine feels betrayed, as he was supposedly promised a contract extension beforehand.

However, this supposed promise has now been broken – and the eventful career of the 34-year-old has been enriched by another chapter.

The former Manchester United player will have to look for a new challenge after seven years in the French capital.

Di María then played his last game against FC Metz on Saturday, scoring in the 67th minute for a 5-0 final score. Afterwards, the Argentine even burst into tears.

Di María as the club’s best provider of assists

The right-winger’s time in Paris was marked by highs and lows. On the one hand, the nimble Argentine established himself as the best provider of assists in the history of the Parisians as a club icon, preparing a whopping 118 goals in 294 games for PSG.

Five championships and four cup victories with PSG also speak for themselves.

In addition, memorable moments such as spectacular free kicks, cheeky lobs and exceptional outside-the-box shots by Di María will be remembered forever. “Ángel Di María has definitely left his mark on the history of the club,” said president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

Di María misses out on Champions League triumph

On the other hand, the Argentine international failed to win the Champions League with PSG.

Nor alongside, or perhaps because of, the huge internal competition for not least Kylian Mbappé, who is staying in Paris after all and has turned down Real Madrid.

Once signed to help the French capital club leapfrog to the European throne, Di María has rarely been able to show himself as a difference-maker in key Champions League games.

The closest PSG came to triumph was in 2020, but they lost the final against FC Bayern 1-0.

Inglorious actions damage Di Maria’s image

Inglorious actions also damaged Di María’s standing in Paris, which is why he is also labelled as an unfinished player.

Among other things, the ex-Real player was shown the red card in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Manchester City in the 69th minute for deliberately kicking Fernandinho.

Di María was already suspended for four games at the beginning of the season because he made negative headlines with a spitting action against Álvaro González.

The arrival of superstar and compatriot Lionel Messi in August 2021 did not make Di María’s situation at PSG any easier – in 30 competitive matches, the scorer of the winning goal in the 2021 Copa América final was often only a wild card.
