Alba Berlin narrowly won the chasing duel in the BBL – and showed strong nerves in the process.

On Sunday evening, the Berliners won 80:79 (44:44) at their long-term rivals FC Bayern München thanks to strong nerves. Alba thus remains second in the table.

The best Berlin scorers were Johannes Thiemann with 14 and Jaleen Smith with 13 points. For Munich, Cassius Winston (20) and Nick Weiler-Babb (16) were the best scorers.

The Berliners found it difficult to get into the game at first. Many throws were missed, which is why the Munich team was already led by double figures after only four and a half minutes (19:9). Alba coach Israel Gonzalez reacted with the first time-out, which seemed to be a wake-up call. The defending champions were now moving the ball much better and their throwing rate increased.

Thiemann keeps his nerves

At the beginning of the second quarter, Alba equalised at 30:30. Now the duel was completely even. The Bavarians were still in the lead most of the time, but the Berliners kept up and equalised again and again before the end of the quarter.

In the third quarter, the Berliners were even able to take the lead for the first time and pull away slightly with five points (64:59). But the Bavarians punished every mistake of the guests, and so it remained close until the end.

The decision was not made until 11.2 seconds before the end when Thiemann converted a free throw to win the game. The last Bayern attack was stopped by Ben Lammers under the basket.
