A bad day for German tennis: Sabine Lisicki and returning Angelique Kerber both lost in Bad Homburg. Daniel Altmaier was eliminated in the round of the last eight in Mallorca.

Defending champion Angelique Kerber was surprisingly eliminated in the quarter-finals of the tennis tournament in Bad Homburg. The 34-year-old from Kiel was beaten 4:6, 6:2, 1:6 by Frenchwoman Alizé Cornet at her home event on Thursday and thus blew her dress rehearsal for the grass-court classic in Wimbledon, which starts on Monday.

Kerber was unable to build on her good performances in the first two rounds. She fought back against defeat in the second set. But Cornet pulled away again in the third.

Lisicki satisfied despite elimination

Sabine Lisicki also missed out on a place in the semi-finals. The 32-year-old from Berlin lost to Caroline Garcia from France 3:6, 6:7 (7:9) in the quarter-finals on Thursday. The former Wimbledon finalist was defeated after 1:56 hours. Lisicki was unable to take advantage of numerous break chances, especially in the second set, and even missed two set points in the tiebreak. Garcia finally made her progress perfect with the first match point.

Lisicki was nevertheless satisfied with the outcome. “It was definitely the right decision to come here and collect points,” said the Berliner after the match. “It brings me further, also in terms of match practice and self-confidence.” Lisicki had only recently celebrated her comeback after a long injury break. “The level that I am playing is top 100 level,” she said with satisfaction.

Altmaier has to bow to Bonzi

Daniel Altmaier was eliminated in the quarter-finals at the tournament in Mallorca. The 23-year-old from Kempen was clearly defeated by Benjamin Bonzi from France 3:6, 4:6 in the dress rehearsal for the grass court classic in Wimbledon on Thursday. Nevertheless, Altmaier was able to draw a positive conclusion shortly before the third Grand Slam tournament of the season, which starts on Monday.

At the grass events in Stuttgart and Halle, he had been eliminated in the first round both times before. In Mallorca, he now celebrated his first two victories on grass this year.
