Gianluigi Buffon is looking forward to the imminent transfer of Ángel Di María to Juventus Turin. The 44-year-old even compares the Argentine to Diego Maradona.

Huge compliments for Ángel Di María!

None other than Gianluigi Buffon has expressed his delight at the Argentine’s imminent transfer from Paris Saint-Germain to Juventus Turin – and in the same breath made a daring comparison.

“Di María is currently like Maradona for the Italian league,” the 44-year-old told the Gazzetta dello Sport. Where does he get this insight from?
Buffon and Di María with a shared past

Buffon explained that players have to be assessed against the background of “the environment in which they find themselves”. The technical level in Italy has become weaker. Di María, on the other hand, has a lot to offer – just like Maradona, who surprisingly moved from glamorous FC Barcelona to comparatively modest SSC Napoli in 1984, a sensation at the time.

“He passes opponents with impressive ease, he is ice-cold in front of goal, he gives assists and he runs all over the pitch,” Buffon continued.

The two had played together in Paris in the 2018/19 season. The fact that Di María is already 34 does not matter: “Motivation, passion and determination are much more important,” Buffon said.

Di María left Paris at the end of May. He is currently without a club. According to media reports, the Argentine has already reached an agreement with Juve.

Buffon himself is now back at Parma Calcio and has a contract until 2024.
