A few days after the verdict in the appeal trial, Jérôme Boateng also has to accept a sporting setback. The defender is substituted in Ligue 1 with an injury.

Jérôme Boateng is having a week to forget.

The 34-year-old was substituted in the 69th minute of Olympique Lyon’s 0:1 defeat against Olympique Marseille.

Performance reasons were not the reason for the early retirement. Rather, the 2014 World Cup winner, who slowly limped off the pitch, was apparently suffering from a knee injury.

Blanc backs Boateng

It was only on Wednesday that Boateng was fined 120 daily rates of 10,000 euros by the Munich Regional Court in his appeal for assault, totaling 1.2 million euros.

After months of being barely considered by Peter Bosz, Boateng, a former Munich man, was just starting to bounce back under new coach Laurent Blanc.

Most recently, Boateng was in the starting eleven four times in a row in Ligue 1. It is uncertain whether he will make another appearance this calendar year.
