The wheat is gradually being separated from the chaff at the US Open – the first quarter-finalists in the men’s and women’s tournaments have been decided.

Italian 13th seed Matteo Berrettini was the first to reach the last eight, but needed a five-set thriller against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Berrettini won 3:6, 7:6 (7:2), 6:3, 4:6, 6:2 and thus continued an impressive series: in his last five Grand Slam tournaments he always reached the quarter-finals.

Casper Ruud now awaits him there. The 23-year-old seventh-ranked player in the world won his round of 16 match against Frenchman Courentin Moutet 6-1, 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 and became the first Norwegian in tournament history to reach the quarter-finals.

Garcia continues winning streak

Caroline Garcia continued her winning ways in the women’s singles and booked her place in the quarter-finals. The resurgent Frenchwoman defeated Alison Riske-Amritraj of the USA 6-4, 6-1 and will now face 18-year-old Coco Gauff of the USA, who defeated Zhang Shuai of China 7-5, 7-5, overturning a 3-5 deficit in the second set, in her second Grand Slam quarter-final appearance. It is already the teenager’s best ever performance at her home Grand Slam.
