Taiwo Awoniyi makes a dream home debut for Nottingham Forest. The promoted team celebrates its first Premier League treble of the millennium – the other former Bundesliga stars also stand out.

Promoted Nottingham Forest have picked up their first points since returning to the English top flight! Thanks to a goal by ex-Union Taiwo Awoniyi, the Tricky Trees beat West Ham United 1:0 on the second day of the league.

With a bit of luck, the 25-year-old centre-forward stumbled the ball into the net from a few yards out in first-half stoppage time after opposite number Ben Johnson involuntarily allowed a Jesse Lingard finish to bounce at his feet. That was enough for Nottingham’s first Premier League win in 23 years as the Hammers first had a goal disallowed and then Declan Rice failed to score from the spot.

Awoniyi was joined in the starting eleven by two other former Bundesliga stars. Moussa Niakhaté, who had moved to the island from Mainz in this transfer window, could also have found himself on the scoresheet but Hammers keeper Fabianski parried his header attempt.

Orel Mangala played for Stuttgart last season but made his star debut for Nottingham on Sunday. The Belgian was denied an assist, however, as referee Robert Jones had to disallow what was supposed to be a 2-0 lead due to offside.

So while Cooper’s side are celebrating success after the opening defeat to Newcastle, West Ham are slipping down the table after two matchdays. The Londoners conceded a 2-0 defeat in their clash with champions Manchester City last week and are still waiting for something to show for their efforts.
