The tennis circus is in Asia, among other places. In Astana, the number 1 Carlos Alcaraz was hit on Tuesday, in Tokyo Casper Ruud failed.
The world number one Alcaraz has already failed at his opening hurdle at the ATP tournament in Astana. The 19-year-old Spaniard, who became number one by beating Casper Ruud (Denmark) in the final of this year’s US Open, lost to Belgian number 66 seed David Goffin 5:7, 3:6.
According to data service provider Opta, it was Alcaraz’s first singles match in almost a year without winning a set – back then at the Masters in Paris, he lost to Frenchman Hugo Gaston.
Next defeat for the Spaniard
The 19-year-old already suffered a defeat a few weeks ago. At the Davis Cup, the youngest world number one in tennis history lost to the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.
His US Open final opponent Ruud also suffered an early defeat in Tokyo. The new world number three was eliminated in the first round against Jaume Munar (Spain/No. 58) after 1:36 hours with a 3:6, 3:6.
Tsitsipas holds off Kukushkin
Greek third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, meanwhile, overcame his hurdle of Mikhail Kukushkin (Kazakhstan) in Astana to progress with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Nick Kyrgios (Australia/5) won even more easily against Tseng Chun Hsin (Taiwan) in Tokyo: 6:3, 6:1.
